Issuing the Challenge

The dictionary defines the word CHALLENGE (noun) as

    1. A call to engage in a contest, fight, or competition
    2. An act or statement of defiance; a call to confrontation.
    3. A demand for explanation or justification; a calling into question.
    4. A test of one's abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking.

I don’t know about you, but for us, any one of the definitions above strike a chord in us as scrapbookers. We may choose to join a challenge with an eye on the prize, or choose to make a layout just to please something in us, or to test ourselves, that we can indeed make a layout with the scrapbooking tools and materials that we have. We may all respond differently when a challenge is issued, but let’s admit it: we all love a challenge.

And since we constantly challenge ourselves, the idea for the Pinoyscrapbookers challenge blog was born.

Kaya is a Tagalog word that means “can”. (The verb, not the noun). Kayang-kaya roughly translated is “definitely can.” Colloquially, kaya with a question mark means “really,” usually said in a challenging way.

So the question “kayang-kaya kaya?” is a dare. Can he/she/they do it? KAYA! Is a response that says, YES, we CAN!
