Fields of Gold

Candy says, KAYA!

I loved this song from the moment I heard it sung by Sting. It as written by Sting for his wife. For me, it evokes a long life of love and companionship. It's something I'm looking forward to as we mature.

Journaling:
Growing old together, seeing time pass with joined hands in our fields of gold, in a song that withstands

FIELDS OF GOLD by Sting
...Will you stay with me, will you be my love,
Among the fields of barley.
Will forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold.
...Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley.
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold....

Materials Used:
Bazzill cs, Thickers Shoebox alpha, Carolina's lace and ribbon, Kotex silver thread, Elit tracing paper, miscellaneous glass beads (clear and amber), StazOn black & olive, VersaMark Watermark, PA embossing powder in gold and in black, Tsukineko Walnut Ink. Stamp used: Stamper's Anonymous Tim Holtz Collection Nature's Discovery 049.

Process/Techniques:
I used a plain yellow ochre cs and stamped all over, first with StazOn black and olive green, then embossed same stamp in black and in gold. Distressing was made by rubbing walnut ink and by rolling and tearing the sides. Also, by rubbing more walnut ink where the stamping was made, I created an illusion of more plants in the background. To hold the photo and the song in tracing paper, I cross-stitched silver thread at strategic places around them. I also sewed clear and amber glass beads together with miscellaneous dried grain stalks for added interest. Photo was also altered in Lightroom to age its look.

About ME:
I love making LOs of my son and of my ancestors. I am very comfortable with the vintage look but love experimenting with bright colors, esp. earth and nature colors, whenever possible. Christmas Glass Balls

Candy says, KAYA!

I've been meaning to do this since last year. I couldn't find clear glass christmas balls, but was fortunate enough to know of a glassmaker who was able to do them for me.

Inside the glass balls, I placed individual photos of our family members, from our grandparents, to current living relatives. These photos were printed on transparencies. This gave the photos an ethereal touch. I also stamped green vines on the sides of the glass. Although not an original idea, since this came from a reader in a scrapbooking magazine, I decided to extend her idea into having individual photos of our ancestors as well. When these glass balls were placed on a tree, our christmas tree literally became a family tree. All 10 balls are all Galo's ancestors from both sides. I also added him, plus all of my family members, or as much of them as possible. Since I don't have complete photos yet, I intend to add on more of our current family into this tree.

Materials used: glass balls, StazOn olive green, wire ribbon with grapes design, misc. olive ribbon, christmas tree trimming of berries and leaves that were cut and reattached on the christmas ball and ribbon, AAS wires, magic wires for hanging.

KAYA 20 - The Christmas Challenge

FAMILY CHRISTMAS TREE/ HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

Christmas is definitely a holiday for the family. So I thought, for my first ever KAYA Challenge, instead of having the standard christmas tree with decor and gifts, why not include your family literally?! This way, your tree literally becomes an ancestral tree where your children can really see and celebrate the lives of their past and present relatives. Children and adults alike will be able to talk about each member of the family since the photo/-s honor each of them. Your tree will be a living family tree this Christmas.

So for your final challenge for year 2008: INCLUDE YOUR FAMILY/ANCESTORS IN YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE/ HOLIDAY DECORATIONS. For those without christmas trees, you can do something similar with any christmas decor, eg. wreath, staircase/curtain swag, table centerpiece, etc.

General Reminders:

1. All entries must include at least 5 photos. These may be individual portraits or group photos. Photos can be of any color or any size. Photos may be current or past, photos of living or deceased relatives. These photos must be part of the decoration (tree, advent wreath, belen/manger scene, stairway decor, etc.) whether they be in the christmas balls, the ribbons, etc. Other extra decorations in the tree/wreath/centerpiece etc. are allowed.

2. For uploading, all projects must have at least 1 group shot on the tree or location of the decor (staircase/wreath, etc); 1 group shot outside the tree or location of decor must be close enough to show all the details. Each uploaded photo should not exceed 300 KB.

3. No journaling is required, but you should have an explanation in the write up as to why you chose to do these holiday decorations of your family. Do include the materials list and techniques you used. I'm sure that your christmas tree/decor will really spark conversations this season, especially amongst the family members.

4. All Family decorations must be new and created in response to the Kaya Challenge.

5. All entries must adhere to the challenge requirements to be eligible to win the RAK.

6. Deadline for sending in your take of the challenge is December 30, 2009 (11:59pm).

Winner of this KAYA 20 Challenge will receive this rak! Hope you can join!!! So go ahead, make your family memories the center of your christmas this year. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Note: Previous challenge winners for October and November are welcome to share their work but are not eligible for the RAK.

To Galo, age 4, to be read on the day you decide to walk down that aisle

Candy says, KAYA!

This KAYA Challenge was quite difficult to execute. The LO itself was easy. It was writing the letter, anticipating what I would feel decades from now, plus anticipating that I may not even be here by then. It was difficult to write it because as soon as I'd start doing so, the tears start flowing. It took me 1 day to do the LO, but also 1 week to write this letter. I'm glad to have done it though as this letter will be a testament of my feelings for my boy when that time comes.

Hidden Letter:
Dearest Galo,

Today, you have decided to walk down that aisle. By the time you read this, I'll be at least 20, 30 or 40 years older. I may not even be there by this time. This is a consequence of marrying a bit older and having you even much later.

Don't get me wrong. Marrying late was our choice, specifically mine. I had to study and find myself in the world before I could commit to your dad for life. I was able to live and experience the life I wanted. I knew what I gave up so I didn't have any misgivings or doubts. I knew what I was ready for.

Having you late was something we didn't anticipate. We have given up hope when you made your presence felt. Because of the difficult pregnancy, I admit I was angry at God and even wished you away. Fortunately, God didn't listen to me at that time. The miracle of your birth changed all that. Again and again, we were reminded that you are our gift, our "regalo." And over the succeeding years, you have made our lives happy, and our family complete.

I am sure that the woman you chose is someone you truly love. My mom once said that a mother always feels that no one is good enough for her child. I often wondered about that if and when the time came. I would like to think that we would have taught you enough to be able to choose someone who deserves your love. Just promise me that you will cherish her like your dad cherished me.

If by this time, I do have the chance to meet her, I will welcome her with open arms and accept her like the daughter I never had.

I love you, my son, with all of my heart. It would be a privilege to see you walk down that aisle, should luck be on my side.

Mommy

P.S. Should you decide to enter a religious community instead, you have our blessings as well. We know that God speaks in many ways. If you listen to His voice inside you, you will know what is right for you.

W3 (3 Wishes)

Candy says, KAYA!

I wasn't going to join since I was avoiding taking current photos of me. I keep on telling myself, I'll have a better photo when I lose weight. And then again, who am I kidding? I should accept reality, but have workable goals to achieve this year.

I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull it off since I wanted more dramatic black, white and red colors only on the LO. I thought it wouldn't be me as it would be a radical departure from my accustomed style. Apparently, I was wrong. It still turned out still my style since I started adding things that was typically favorites of mine and yet it turned out also different. Hopefully, this take on an edgier "Candy" will help me to stretch my LO skills.

The journal speaks for itself. The first two wishes will help me focus on keeping myself healthy and making me feel good about my "maturing" body. The last wish is for the growth of my soul.

Hello, I'm Candy Bonoan-Lagazon, Montessori teacher, wife to Arn, and mother to Galo, my 3 year old son. Aside from teaching, I love arts and crafts, drawing, painting, singing, playing the piano, and tracing my Bonoan Family Tree. I've been scrapping for 3 years ever since my son's birth, but only joined scrapping forums this August. I'm learning more about this craft in the last 3 months just by hanging around other scrappers than I'v e ever done scrapping alone. Scrapping is the ultimate art release for me as it combines materials I love and techniques I've learned over the years. Lately, I'm challenged to combine my love for scrapping and for genealogy by coming up with LOs using old photos of my relatives.

Lifeguard

Candy says, KAYA!

Hidden Journaling:
If I were stranded on an island, I'd like you to come and find me. You will be my inspiration, my hope, my dream. My lifeguard, guarding my life.

Materials Used:
Bazzill cardstock colors: white, cream, dark blue, light blue, mint green, olive green and brown; Filstar cardstock orange (from mini-book project); COX watercolor paints, Prince color pens, Crayola Crayons.

Techniques:
Paper-tearing cardstock (I decided I wanted to go one step further and lose the pair of scissors while marooned in the island.) Layering cardstock, but outlining them with watercolor to show definition. Water-color painting over cardstock with both dry brush, and wet-on-wet technique (wet paper, wet brush) so it smears. Doodling with water-based color pens to give an impression of pattern on paper, then washing/painting them with a little water, careful not to erase all of the doodling.
