The Way He Was, The Way He is Now

Ching says, KAYA!

I need to learn to accept that this is part of my son’s “Growing Up”! Letting go of the old ways of my son’s childhood is allowing him to grow-up and prepare for whatever the future holds for him.

Journaling Reads:
I love my child. For so many years he was small, dependent, vulnerable, but full of wonder and curiosity about the world. Now, as a teenager, he exhibits a sense of independence and refuses to accept any suggestions I may make. The current
experience is vastly different from what I remember in years gone by, but hopefully
this stage will pass quickly.

Materials Used:
K&Comp. - Basic Grey pattern paper, Chipboard letters and embellishments, DCWV Cardstock & Pattern paper, Memory Makers brads and ribbons, Sizzix die-cut letters
Fiskars - heart border punch & paper hole punch, Adhesives squares & glue.

Techniques:
Layering, Mounting, Punching, Die-cutting, Journaling

About ME:
Ching, a stay at home mom to a 15 years old son and married to a wonderful man. We live on the Southeast coast of USA. I started scrapbooking in 2004, but like most, I have more supplies than pages, done. I eagerly began scrapping again when I joined the Pinoy Scrapbookers group in January, 2008 and quickly did some albums of layouts for my family. I love to make double layouts with 2 to 4 photos each.

Hidden Journaling:

Ready for school MJ, start building your dreams as I hope you would help us fulfill ours for you. Believe you can do things you wanted most and believe you can do it. Learn and inspire us and others as well. We let you go and learn and earn your independence as you are now ready for school.

The Geek Squad

Sheryl says, KAYA!

Perfect chance for me to scrap about the group and the colleagues I became friends with while I was still working. It was time for me to let go of that episode of my life and time to move on to what the future holds for me. Though it feels sad to miss their company, especially during lunch breaks where the discussion is suffused with interesting topics, I realized that I don't have to let go of the good relationships, much more of the friendship.

Journaling:
the Geek Squad. Spent lunchtime for almost a year with them for my daily dose of geeky thoughts. When I left the company, I realized I only have to let go of 'the work'. The rest, like Friendship, I can keep. Thank you, Geek Squad.

Potty Time

Susie says KAYA!

Here's my take on this month's challenge. I want to let go of my boy's nappy at 18 months, but still no luck yet. He thinks his potty trainer seat is his new chair, a garbage can, or a storage for his toys.

Journalling:
Wow! Mama got me this toy @ 18 months,oh, it's a new chair! How to sit here? first, put my feet into the tiny hole, then find a comfortable spot to sit. Mama removes my nappy and gets upset if i pee anywhere in the house. I like to sit here in this position, cool chair! Or i hide my toy cars inside...........Jerome @ 21 months.

Materials used:

Transitioning

Marissa says, KAYA!

The LO below is about my daughter transitioning from high school to college life. It is difficult to let go especially if it turns my husband and me into empty nesters! Most especially when it is a daughter who has been sheltered all her life going to the big city. Come to think of it...she is beginning to start her own life. Time really flies...so fast it hit me hard!

Journaling:

God allows u-turns

Nina says, KAYA!

Whenever I think of the roads I could have travelled, I don't really have much regret since I know I am where I need to be, as God's will. But what's harder to face are other people's comments and questions, like, "Ay, sayang, ba't hindi ka na nag-wo-work?" or "Bakit hindi mo tinapos Master's mo?"

My only response is, "Tapos na yun. Masaya na ako where I am."

I "borrowed" my title from the book of the same name but haven't read it yet.

Journaling:
I always thought my life would go in a straight line. Since I was young, I always knew I wanted to be a writer. But after failing to get my Master's degree and quitting my job to become a stay-at-home mom, I realize everything is really in God's hands and He knows what's best.

Good Bye

Diane says, KAYA!

What a great Challenge! Thanks Tin! I love the sketch! Anyways, this is a hard one for me again. I was thinking of making a LO about Huey but I made the Letting Go LO last last month I think. And I thought my feelings of the leaving of my niece and nephew on the 14th to Kuwait is perfect for this challenge. I am again losing another child of mine. They were like my kids already. But I have to let them go. And look forward for their vacation here or our vacation in Kuwait... hmmm sounds fun! LOL!

So here is my entry for KAYA 15. I hope you all like it!

Journaling:
Alyssa Maree and Danniell Vibar, my two loving niece and nephew. Treated as my own child. Loved and envied by many. We played a lot on the backyard, watched thomas and friends on Cartoon Network and DVD’s, Eat so many hotdogs, cried for being stubborn, scolded so many times, laugh together with some silly things, and went to the Mall together to buy milk and diapers. I enjoyed a lot being with you two for 10 months. I will surely miss those moments that we are together. My dear lilo and Liit continue being the source of happiness to everyone, never disappoint your parents and always obey them. Be good OK?

I can’t believe its been 10 months since you two arrived here in Bicol. Time flies really fast. And now you two will leave us already and go back to Kuwait and be with your parents. It is SAD but you need your parents more than us and they need you too. Goodbye my dear Lilo and Liit. We will miss you so much! We will see each other again very very soon. Love you!

Time to Fly

Tin says KAYA!

I am officially a college mom. I can't really explain it. Sometimes i feel anxious for my DD and there are times when i'm scared out of my wits, but I guess it's what moms do . . . worry, even endlessly. Just as much I would love to always have my children look up to me, there comes a time when we just have to stand back and let go and let them be their own heroes. Easier said than done *wink* but i'm getting there :-)

Journalling:
It was 2 o'clock in the afternoon when we were all scurrying around the condo helping you prepare for your high school graduation that evening. As I was passing by your room I caught a glimpse of your white toga hanging outside your door. I just had to pause and take a photo, an image held in time where memories of your primary and high school days came rushing back to me.

I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE IT! WE DID IT BABY GIRL! This is the REAL DEAL. Soon you'll be dealing with new classmates, hard core professors, boys, keeping count of your cuts, boys, exposure trips, internships, did I mention boys? You get the picture :-) Back in ICA you were safe behind walls . . . in CSB the world is literally at your reach. Perhaps these are just new fears for your dear ol' mumerz, but I TRUST & KNOW you to always do the right thing (including BOYS, *ahem*).

NOW is your time to discover yourself and the world . . . now is your time to FLY!

KAYA 15 - Scrap a Sketch

2008 for yours truly has been quite interesting, my DD is off to college, moving to a new home , new ventures . . . that said, we also usually also let go to make room for all things new.

Just as we usually scrap, we want to grow out of our comfort zone and dabble with themes and even techniques not tried before. Perhaps if you often made a girly layout, how about making one that's more graphic? Or if you always scraplifted one layout, how about scraplifting a combination of 5 layouts?

But how to start?

On those mojo-less days, what gets me going is a good sketch. Whether it's from our favorite sketch sites, or seeking inspiration from fellow scrappers a sketch is a great way to get your creative juices flowing.

So have a go at my humble sketch for our July Kaya:

Here are the requirements for this months Kaya:
  1. LO's must be 8 1/2 x 11 OR 12x12, either Digital or Traditional
  2. Follow the sketch as you please, you can copy it exactly, move it upside down, move elements here and there. As long as you have the essence of the sketch, you're good to go.
  3. Use any materials you wish.
  4. The theme of your LO must be LETTING GO. Whether you have a child off to his first day of kindergarten, letting go of your favorite sweater or foregoing dessert (heaven forbid!). You get the picture :-)
  5. And of course, have fun!
  6. Deadline for this challenge is on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, 11:59 pm.
a Birthday month . . .
TO all PS Kaya participants:
July is my birthday month and I was so happy that I got assigned for Kaya 15. Other than prizes for the random picks for the Traditional and Digital Layout, here's an additional incentive . . . as thanks to you, my fellow PSers for sharing so much inspiration since our first Kaya challenge, the FIRST 5 participants to upload their LO's by 12:00AM (Philippine time) July 23, 2008 to the Kaya Challenge Blog gets a small prize from me! Soooo time to get a scrappin'!

First up, thank you so much to all those who joined. The time and effort you exerted in the layouts are truly something to applaud.

Last April, Lee asked her daughters to draw out the names, and last month, Nina let her husband draw out the winners. I wanted to be different, so I sought the help of my good friend Stephen in naming the winners for this month's challenge.

Bjay says, KAYA!

About ME:
I have always loved doing arts and crafts. I used to make macrame belts, paper mache, hair accessories, cross stitch, candles, beaded accessories and Christmas decor. My current favorites are card making, stamping and scrapbooking. I think these 3 are intertwined with each other. I do believe these will be lifelong hobbies as there will always be friends to get in touch with, pictures to document and stories to tell. I am learning to use Photoshop Elements by reading on-line tips and tutorials and trying to do what I read. I hope to become a good photographer through the classes I just started recently.

Ice Cream

Lee says, Kaya!

I know Jenn said a layout about any kind of food, except that the photos have to have been taken during summer. For some reason, my brain interpreted that to be summer foods. Yes, there was a short-circuit somewhere. :-) But, I am happy that this layout is done. I've had the intention to scrap how my KiDS get all excited when they hear the ice cream cart's musical sound since I took this photo a year ago. It brings back memories of my own childhood, except then we had the pleasure of partaking of dirty ice cream from Mamang Sorbetero or ice drop with mongo.

Journaling:

Tan-da-ran...when you hear that musical sound there is no keeping you inside the house. You just gotta have this cold treat.

Materials Used:
CS - Debbie Mumm; PPS - SEI; Punchers - Fiskars; Ribbons - Oriental Trading, Doodlebug; Alphabets - Karen Foster; Eyelets - All About Scrapbooking; Stickers - EK Success; Pen - Zig, American Crafts; Foam - Darice; Adhesive - Saunders.

Technique Used:
Nothing much, but as usual I had difficulty keeping a firm grip on my paper, eyelets and Crop-a-Dile, all at the same time. But I really had fun with the lace and threading water border punches, which were really easy to use. And pretty, too.

About Me:
I have been scrapping for about two years now, and I still continue to enjoy it. I love being creative while at the same time preserving my memories through photos, journals and layouts. You you can learn more about me at my blog.

Popsicle Kids

Marissa says, KAYA!
Summer from where I am is from June 21 to August 20. There are the sure signs of Summer - ivy winding its way up the pergola, flowers swaying in the cool breeze, mosquitoes, fruit flies, and bees abound, kids on bikes, shorts pants, short-sleeved shirts, and flip flops... We haven't had a chance to celebrate summer with food yet so I used old pictures of (L-R) Christina, Stephanie, & Monica in order to meet this month's deadline. There's always ice cream in the fridge, but one bought from the ice cream man is an entirely different treat!
Journaling Reads:
Summer's not complete without shirts & shorts and the Popsicle Trio.

Materials Used:
Lollipop Designs [LPD] - Beez & Bloomz & Bugz ivy, flowers, bee, alpha;
Font - freestyle script
ByGod'sDesign - Popsicle Paradise background paper, popsicles & people sticks
Program Used - Photoshop CS
Techniques Used:
Re-sizing, free forming, adding shadows; duplicating some elements, re-colored the kids skirts from pink to purple, yellow, and red; re-colored some of the flowers; the original alphabet set is made of just a black outline. I filled the interior with green to make it stand out.
About me:

I have leaned towards digital scrapbooking mainly because of ease. I make albums of traditional pages that I give away as gifts, but in all honesty, not at all as intricate and 3D as the pages made by PS members.
I am a recovering scrapbook paper collector.... (^.^). There is hope for me yet. I have learned to let go of my stash. A little bit at a time, I've given papers away to nieces in the Philippines so they, too, can experience the joy of scrapbooking.

Ice Cream

Me-anne says, KAYA!

Here's my take on this Kaya Challenge, I was actually inspired to do a layout base from what I've learned from Valerie and Janna's Got Sketch Class.

Journaling Reads:
Mj is a picky eater and making her eat one must have a good convincing power and expert in persuasion with all the strategy on hand! Hence, even convincing her to eat an ice cream is an ordeal, but when she tasted the sugar coated cone last April 13, 2008, when we attended Children's Party sponsored by our community- she found out that ice cream taste superb and for her its the best!

Comfort Food

Nita says, KAYA!

My daughter, Sam, is a finicky eater. In fact, if it were not for the bribes of dessert, I doubt if she will be able to finish a decent meal. She has a soft spot though for dairy products, which I shamelessly abuse to my advantage - hehehe. So, to pay tribute to this wonderful concoction called Milk, I have decided to do this layout of Sam with her favorite food.

Journaling Reads: Be it chocolate, cheese, yogurt or ice cream... your favored comfort food has to have one essential ingredient - "Dede".
Materials Used: BG Sultry pps (Posh & Swell); BG Sultry chip stickers; American Craft thickers (Gift Box & Rootbeer Float); Prima Say It In Crystals; American Craft slick writer (brown); Crochetted flower; Checkered ribbon.
Other Materials: Simply Scrappy circle template; EK Success corner punch.

About Me:
I am a terribly slow scrapper. I keep telling myself that I am just relishing the process, but as we all know... that is just an excuse. While scrapping, it is normal to see me on my knees searching under the table for missing embellishments. You see, I have 3 devious cats who delights in taking up space on my table and swiping things on it from time to time. They are terribly cute though and good company, too. So I let them get away with it and leave them alone with their whiskers unplucked - for now.

Fruits I Grew Up Eating

Michelle says, KAYA!

This is mini book I created about “ME”. And one of my topics are about the fruits I grew up eating as a child in the Philippines. I left Philippines when I was only 12 years old. Thankfully almost the whole family is in the states so I am able to eat Filipino food growing up. But the one thing I miss the most and constantly crave are the fruits I grew up eating. I can remember looking forward to the times when I can go to the province where my grandma live, to be able to play in the farm and pick the fruits right off of the trees. It was an amazing experience! My kids will never know that kind of play. But I want to share with them, at least the knowledge about the things I had when I was a kid in PI and share my love for the fruits that only Philippines can offer.

Materials used:
Altered Kit paper
Craft paper for fold outs
Target chipboard letters
Prima mini flowers
Staples

Techniques:
Cut up Craft paper to mat pictures and leave a half an inch on one side to create a gate fold affect. For the space of one 4x6 pictures you can put as many as you want using the gate fold technique. Here I was able to put 7 pictures but took up room for one.

About Me:
I have been scrapbooking for almost 10 years now. I started out being introduce through stamping and started scrapping while I was pregnant with my first child. I was hooked and never looked back. I have always had a love for papers since I can remember. And now as an adult I can actually play and buy all the papers I want to heart’s content. I love scrapbooking because I love creating, I have a lot of ideas in my head and if I don’t get it out I will go crazy. It is my outlet, my joy and passion. I am lucky enough to have such a supporting husband and kids who leave me alone and let me play. Lol!!

A Treat for Mom?

Jenn says, KAYA!

Every year, my Aunt Julie visits the Manaoag Church in Pangasinan. When I heard about the roadtrip she and her former high school classmates are having, I went to La Union to come with them. I decided to come a day before her birthday for I also would like to come with her as she visits the church. It wasn't my first time there, but the last time I went to the church August last year, I didn't know there's a part in the grounds called "the Rosary Park." That's what I wanted to check.

We arrived in the church grounds pretty late, and the park was closed during lunch time, so instead of the usual lunch at the mall in Urdaneta, we all decided to eat at Chowking, which was just across the church, so we can check back the park after lunch. Thinking what to order was a bit difficult at first, and brother made a joke and asked Aunt to order the salu-salo treat for mom instead. You see, Aunt Julie is still single at age 50+, so we (her nephews and nieces) always tease her (all in good fun, though). Anyway, at first Aunt brushed off the idea, but when I saw that the meal package includes free Halo-Halo for the mom, I told Aunt maybe they won't really require people to have a "mom" before you can order the meal. And if they ask, for sure they won't doubt that either is of us is a mom since there are 16 year old young ladies who are mothers already. Whew, we were stressing so much about the food! =)

Journaling reads:
"Neither Aunt Julie nor I were mothers, yet we opted to order the Salu-Salo treat for moms when we went to Manaoag Church in Pangasinan. Actually, it was the free Halo-Halo that we (or I) wanted to have. And why not? With the summer's heat, I am sure anyone would opt to have at least one serving of Halo-Halo, regardless if you're a mom or not." - Manaoag, Pangasinan 20 May 2008

Materials Used:
Patterned Papers: DCWV, Miss Elizabeth's, and Cherry Arte (among others - some of the papers were given as prizes and I don't know their labels)
Others: cardstock stickers (Basic Grey), cardstock button and embossed corner (bought at Simplejoys), Flowers (Prima), blings.

KAYA 14 - The Flavors of Summer

It has been said that Filipinos love to eat. I, for one can attest to that, but I cannot agree to this unless I have some proofs. This month's challenge is all about food... summer foods, that is. Well, it's already June, and I am sure all of us have our own share of summer outings and getaways, so this challenge isn't really that hard to do. Yup, let's ease out a bit on the challenge, and let's all get funky!

For this challenge, you have to scrap a photo with food on it, and it has to be taken during summertime of any particular year - you can even scrap a picture of your ancestors while eating, if you have a picture of that. But while the challenge is about food, it doesn't really have to be 100% focused on the food. Let's say you attended a wedding last month and you want to scrap a picture taken with the couple as they feed each other their wedding cake - you don't really have to talk about the cake eating (if that's what you want); you can do a serious journal about what the cake eating symbolizes in your own opinion. Also, let it be known that the challenge isn't just about ice cream, halo-halo, or watermelon. You can also scrap about your recent food trip, or your favorite recipe -- the options are endless, provided all the pictures in the layout has to be taken on summertime.

You can submit layouts in any format (traditional, digital, or hybid), shapes, and sizes. You can scraplift or use a sketch, and you can submit as much entries as you want, but of course, your name will be put in the raffle just once. =) One basic requirement though, you have to include the date when the picture was taken.

Deadline for submission would be on June 29, 11:59PM. Happy scrapping!
