Shunga

Mich says, KAYA!

I did not have any intentions of making this lay-out when I made it. Work was just so unbelievable and my doctor has advised me to take things easy and to sleep early. My parents even took the kids for an overnight just so that I could have a proper sleep but since I have been used of staying awake until the wee hours, I entertained myself and did some doodling and coloring and ended up with this Schunga Sisters lay-out. Schunga is the name of my group back when we were in college. The word schunga to us just means so many things like, loko-loko, bading, tanga-tanga, saya-saya... and many others. Its a generic term which we all understood. We give great respect to this name. And so, am dedicating this LO to my Schunga Sisters who I miss so much.

Materials:
Permanent Black Pen, Doodle Template, Colored Pencils of my daughter and cardstock.

About ME:
Im Mich Sonza, married to a very supportive husband - Gilbert; with 2 kids Dominique (4) and Benedict (2). Been scrapping since I was little but just started achival scrapbooking last 2006. Since then I have been addicted to this craft because at least now, I share it with people with the same passion that I have. I have committed myself to restore and document family events. I have disciplined myself to only scrap only when there is a dead time on my hands. Family time is still my priority. So far, everything is just so great!

Swimming Lesson from Papa

Beth says, KAYA!

Pheww…this layout almost didn’t make it. The winds at this part of the island where I’ve settled were still pretty strong and kept blowing on my small pieces of paper. (Wink.) Kidding aside, halfway into the layout, I grew tired of shredding CSs and gluing them back together that I just stopped working on it. One day, as I was viewing and admiring the other entries in the challenge blog, the words in red on the header of the blog caught my attention…"Kayang-kaya, kaya?” I retrieved my unfinished project and resumed working on it. Na-kaya ko!

Journaling:
For her final lesson, Papa threw a startled Erika to the deep part of the pool. Her instinct was to panic. But we urged her to swim to the edge. And she did!

Tools and materials used:
CSs – blue, orange, black, white; Bic Marking Ultra Fine Point Permanent Marker – blue and black; Pentel pens – blue, black; Scissors; UHU Twist & Glue

Process:
Cutting the blue and white CSs into bits and gluing the pieces to the black CS.

About ME:
I’ve had a purely retail professional experience of more than 20 years before I stopped working March of 2006. So far, I have not considered going back to work as I’m enjoying my new role as stay-at-home wife to Raffy and mom to Erika (9). I graduated from UP Diliman with a degree in BS Industrial Engineering. I discovered about scrapbooking only through the internet. I used to be involved in cross stitching and candlemaking before I learned about this craft. I began collecting scrapbooking supplies and tools late 2006 but only started making layouts early this year. I used to wonder why scrappers would still subscribe to expensive scrapbooking magazines when there are a lot of materials in the web. I found the answer to this question after I bought my first magazine, the Top 10 issue of CK. I also enjoy shopping for patterned papers but would rather look at them than use them. Scrapbooking relaxes me. It also complements my love for taking photos of everything.

Soulmates

Marian says, KAYA!

I found this picture while trying to sort things out at home. It is a surprise treasure (although picture quality not too good) as Alex and I have very few pictures together while he was my boyfriend. (This is a scraplift from Kim Watson in the CK Sept 07 issue.)

Journaling:
We were soul mates. We were good for each other and understood each other completely. We evolved and became better persons without a conscious effort to change each other. This is the reason we lived and loved together in almost perfect harmony for more than 33 years. Pretty good record for a relationship which my parents predicted was doomed from the start and couldn't last.

This is my tribute to you, my thanks to you for being a good husband, good father and even better grandfather. I am sure if you were blessed with a longer life, we would still be together for another 33 years or even more. 10/14/07
Photo - Alex and Marian circa 1975

Materials Used:
Bazzill white CS, DCWV textured CS. Tools used: scissors, watercolor pencils, Staedler Triplus pen and glue.

Process:
I used bond paper to make my own temporary templates to see if the swirls looked ok and if the letters would fit into the space. It took several attempts before finally tracing the template at the back of the cardstock and then cut with scissors. I doodled the flowers on white CS with black pen and colored them with water color pencil, cut them out and glued to CS. Doodled a few more small flowers directly on the background CS. Used the triplus pen for journalling. I usually don't hand journal because my writing is ugly and sometimes even I can't read what I wrote.

About ME:
I started rubber stamping and card making before actually getting into scrapbooking. My favorite subjects are my granddaughter and 2 daughters. I love to shop for new paper, embellishments and anything related to scrapbooking.
My husband just passed away more than a month ago. This has given me more time for myself but also added other duties which I don't quite enjoy. I escape through scrapbooking.

Journaling:
Be kind, be happy, be inquisitive, be bold, be strong, be sensitive, be loving, be caring, be brave, be you
Materials:
Bazzill dark blue and cream cardstock, Sterling scrapbook papers, blue pen, glue, scissors, green Faber Castel highlighter, black marker

Technique used:
All are hand cut. I mat the photo on a yellow CS then handwrite the poem. I cut s strip of light blue CS and doodled circles to make it look like a patterned paper. I then cutted another strip using a cream CS and cut strips of green, yellow, red and blue CS to make it look like a patterned paper. I drew 6 circles of the 3 each of the same size in a yellow, red and green. The smaller circles I drew 4 small circles in the center to make it look like buttons. I then cut a big circle on a red CS and drew running stitch around it and wrote Andrei and the date using a blue pen. I used a green highlighter to write the title on a green CS and used a black marker to outline it.

About ME:
I am Katrina but my friends call me Khei. I am 22 years old, mother to 3 year old Benedict Andrei. I started scrapbooking 3 years ago but I only scrapbook full time last June when I met Joanne Yap and introduced me to the SE. I love scrapbooking because it’s my de-stresser and it makes me remember good memories. I can challenge myself to be creative. Feel free to visit my blog: www.scrappykhei.blogspot.com.

Love yourself

CABBIE says, KAYA!

I was inspired by Bjay's "Love yourself" layout in commemoration of breast cancer awareness this October. I used her title but with a photo of myself, i think that we as women of the new decade should be aware of how and what breast cancer is and how early detection can make a difference for us.

i incorporated some patterns of the haliotis specie (abalone) as part of my doodling. well, nothing significant about it. i just want to divert and explore possibilities instead of using flowers. the eyes-like design on the middle part if you look closely, would suggest awareness ( i had written the word aware all over those eyes-like patterns).

the symbol of the breast awareness ribbon takes a strong place here. it symbolizes what my layout is all about.

Journaling:

breast cancer can affect anyone...it doesn't choose... it doesn't care
let the world be aware that this condition seeks those who doesn't care...

Materials used:

dcwv cardstocks
lyra watercolor pencils
crayola and whispers markers
zig sketch black pen

All About Ian

Julie says, KAYA!

I liked this challenge very much. Can you tell that I am using it to catch up on Ian’s childhood album? I also thought this is a great opportunity to try doodling. I’ve always liked basic LOs, and they are most appealing to my kids.

Ian interviewed me last weekend for a magazine feature he is writing at school (that inspired me to create this LO.) Just like any 8-year old kid would, he chose the topic, “About Me”  …what, when, where, how….was I when I was 3?”

Journaling:
You were… "a very curious kid...climbing trees was what you liked best...you never forget “Little Tree.” you did not like naps…you started reading at 3 ½...you loved reading - you’re a voracious reader... you loved to watch TV…your best friend was Jason – still is...you became big brother at 3...you had always been a very loving big brother...Mom and Dad love you a lot!”

Materials/Techniques Used:
First I doodled and wrote journal lines with a black millennium zig pen on yellow cardstock, then cut each journal line. Then I adhered each cutout to a darker yellow cardstock. I colored in the letters with markers to add some life to the otherwise all-black journal. Then I doodled away!

Inspiration Used:
CK Hall of Fame winner, Mou Saha (Creating Keepsakes Hall of Fame 9 Special Issue); Elsie Flanagan (of 52 Scrapbooking Challenges) and Rhonna Farrer (Autumn Leaves).

About ME:
Full time Mom to Ian and Sara Jade; wife to the loving, funny and handsome Jeff. Philippine-born, living with my family in the US for almost 2 decades. Volunteer Art and Reading teacher in my kids’ classrooms. When not involved with kids, I work from home as President of my own Human Resources and Learning Management International Consulting firm, and as hands-on partner of www.bookoto.com. Scrapbooking is a hobby my kids, friends, and I share and enjoy very much. Cardmaking, Photography, Suzuki Music (piano and violin), and Interior Design (only of my own home) and cooking are great interests of mine. “Doodling” is now added to the list.

Retro

Marix says KAYA!

Arghhh! That was my reaction when I read about Donna's challenge, not again! So after sleepless nights *LOL*, and tons of sketches, I finally gave it a go. Turned out my LO was pretty easy, I just based my design with my outfit.

Journaling:
It was St. Therese's Church feast dinner and the theme was RETRO! Bought this outfit 5 hours b4 the event! Yeah baby!

Materials used:
Bazzill cs, pentel pen, pilot sign pen, grant glue stick

Techniques/Process:
Everything was handdrawn directly to cs using pentel pen, hand cutting

About ME:Hi! I'm Marix, single and currently working as a Systems Analyst in Singapore. I've been scrapbooking since highschool but never knew such a term ever existed. Back then I've been using magazines to cut out titles and images and used the magnetic albums which sadly are all not acid free. I only discovered the term scrapbooking and acid free in 2004 and have been doing it since then. I scraplift, use sketches and find inspiration through advertisements. I'm a traditional scrapper and learning to do digital. I consider myself as a free style scrapper who loves embellishments and texture in a layout. You can read about my scrappy life at http://scrappalific.blogspot.com/ and also please visit http://scrappersatsg.blogspot.com/ to see the LOs of our fellow scrappers based here in sg. Thanks!

Like A Flower

Me-Anne says, KAYA!

Actually, I already started an LO using my youngest daughter's picture (Hannah), but my eldest MJ asked me, siya naman daw, because recently, most of my challenge LOs were Hannah's pictures. She chose pictures of her and she has chosen plenty. I am actually having a hard time figuring out what to do with those pictures. I wanted to highlight every picture because for me she is just so lovely and gorgeous...

After 2 days of thinking I got this idea and here and it is:

Journaling:
There is so much about you that we all like, each day you make us feel happy and proud
and we admire to see you bloom...like a flower!

Material Used:
CS (yellow, light green for the mat, green for the leaves/Faber Castel Wax Color/American Craft Slick writer black.

Technique Used:
Free handcutting of photos, mat, flowers and leaves. Doodling without any templates and drawing.

About ME:
Joining the challenges makes me feel already a winner, because the LO itself is my prize. The more my loveones, my friends and you guys feel happy about my LO gives me the self-fulfillment already and it gives me the drive to scrap more and learn more because I'm still a work in progress on this passion that I started to love -Scrapbooking! TFL!

I had a hard time thinking what will be my LO, hard time finishing my work, running out of pictures for my LO, can't think of any styles and can't draw pictures on what to do on this month challenge - mental block for short. Finally, almost 2 weeks of thinking on this LO I just came out with this. I am not impressed with the outcome of my LO's but almost liking it, too.

Journaling:

New into scrapbooking for 6 months, I am still improving and learning ideas from the scrapbooking masters and idols. I love taking photos of different angle to my daughter, love to shop, love scrapbooking and love to participate and join challenges.

Cousins

Alby says, KAYA!

For this layout, I used Yana's picture again, though this time, her cousin Sophie joined her in the picture. The photo was taken by her dad last year using a black and white film which was scanned to get the digital image. Anyway, I fell in love with this photo the first time I saw it. Yana and Sophie are just too cute!!! I wanted to use this in last month's challenge but as I mentioned that time, the actual picture I used then perfectly matched the digital papers. So I am thankful for the chance to use the pic in this month's challenge.

Journaling:
Cuteness runs in the family (Yana & Sophie, aged 4 & 2)

Materials Used:
Cardstock (Fabriano), Watercolor (Rembrandt), Pens (Staedler Triplus), Adhesive (Elmer's Craft Bond)

Techniques Used:
I drew flowers and leaves on cardstock, painted them and cut them. No two flowers/leaves are exactly alike in shape, size or color. I also doodled on the cardstock using watercolor. This was very easy to put together. I just spent a bit of time letting the paint dry before cutting the leaves and flowers using scissors.

About Me:
Hi I'm Alby! I'm married to my very indulgent hubby, Ariel, who is also my number one fan in scrapping. Been scrapping since 2005 but only got to know about acid-free scrapping since last year. I love scrapping because it helps me showcase my photos creatively. It is my stress buster and my "me time". I love that each layout gives me different experience so I am never bored. I scrap because I want to remember the details of how I lived my life because sometimes, I only remember the big picture. I prefer paper scrapping because I love to touch the layouts, look at hidden journaling, feel the dimension with my fingers, explore pockets and inserts, and I just love the whole interactive feel. However, I've also recently started digital scrapping and I love how it connects me to my favorite hobby even when I am away from my precious scrapping stash. You may see some of my work at www.scrap-my-life.blogspot.com.

Blue Hamper

Diane says, KAYA!
I super love patterned papers so this challenge is very hard for me again (Part 2 ba ito ng Idol? hehehheh!). I love to doodle so this challenge is in favor of me na. The pattern, the title and the swirls were created by my doodles.

This is my cousin Choi. A very chubby one! I hope you like my entry! TFL!

Ma-Cho Temple

Jenn says, KAYA!

I really had a hard time thinking how to execute this challenge without pattern papers, but I was happy I was able to pull it off. I am not really a cardstock type of a scrapper, so imagine my relief when I finished doing this one.

The idea of this layout is from a layout of CD Muckosky, published on Creating Keepsakes April 2007 issue. Since I cannot stitch some thread here, I just mimicked the cross stitching by using strips of cardstocks. This challenge also made me reunite myself with the very first craft I learned = papier-mache.

Journaling Reads:
"Built as a 'thank you' gift to God for saving his life, stepping inside the grounds of this temple was truly majestic. The intricate details in the architecture was splendid, and even though I was not able to see how the temple looks like inside, having to see its surroundings was enough to make me feel the love invested to make this place come to life. Ma-Cho Temple, San Fernando, La Union, 15 August 2007

Techniques Used:
Layering, Papier-Mache, Handwritten Titles and Journals, Doodling

Materials Used:
Cardstocks - Karen Le Mieux by Provo Craft, Filstar - All About Scrapbooking, Miss Elizabeth's, DCWV * Pens - Sakura Pigma Micron 04 (black), Staedtler Tripus (brown) * Others - Elmer's Craft Bond, water colors

You Are My I Love You

Khei says, KAYA!

Journaling:
You Are My I Love You (Poem by Maryann K. Cusimano)

I am your parent, you are my child. I am your quiet place, you are my wild. I am your calm face, you are my giggle. I am your wait, you are my wiggle. I am your finish line, you are my race. I am your praying hands, you are my saving grace. I am your lullaby, you are my peekaboo. I am your goodnight kiss, you are my I love you.

Materials Used:
Puncher, scissors, cardstock (Bazzil, Sterling scrapbook paper), glue, Pilot ballpoint pen, black marker

Techniques:
I traced a paisley using a pattern that I have and handcut it. I punched circles using different colors of cardstock strips and pasted it on a paisley. I cut thin strips of different colors of cardstock and pasted it on another paisley. I used tearing technique for the yellow background. I used a blue CS strip that I punched and use it as a boarder for the photo. I also hand-cut different sizes of circles. I used a regular Pilot pen for the journaling.

Nanay and Me

Roxannee says, KAYA!

It took me a while to have an idea for this challenge....yes, I've got pictures but which? I got papers but what to do with them? Drawing? Maybe not ....my drawing skills are a bit rusty... Then I stumbled upon this picture of nanay and me when she came for a visit, and I reckon flowers would suit the two of us (can't put much flowers on my sons' LO's- finally I made a girly one, yes!!!!)...so here it is...

Heaven's Gift To Me

Marissa says, KAYA!

Stranded: Chapter 2

After a few days stranded on an island, I decided I have to do something to keep my sanity! I opened my precious scrapping luggage which saved me from drowning as I don’t really know how to swim. Everything was ruined except for some supplies I placed in an air-tight Ziploc freezer bag. A photo of Christina; plain cardstocks: blue for my background [just like the skies above me as I sat on the beach checking each item in the bag]; yellow like the pale flowers that bloomed in the distance lining up the horizon where most of the greenery is found; orange like the afternoon sun that will soon set in a few hours; green like the kelp washed up on the beach, and white…like the sand between my toes. As I scrounge around a little bit more, there scattered on the shore beside me are colored fine-tipped Sharpies, pencils, pens, and some pieces of crayons [must belong to someone else as I don’t remember bringing any]. I rescued my glue stick floating in shallow waters among the rocks. What is that glint I see on the sand?! Yeyyy!!!! My tiny folding scissors!

Technique:
Everything on my LO is hand-drawn, hand-cut, and made from cardstocks from the DCWV Summer and Spring Stacks [except for the photo]. The journaling is from the song “You Are So Beautiful to Me” by Joe Cocker.

If you want to find out details of how I made my LO, check it out here. Thank you for looking.

About Me:
I am CraftFairy. I love to make crafts to give away as gifts. I’ve made a few bucks crocheting baby blankets, making Christmas decorations, mini dolls, and jewelry. Making money out of my crafts was not really a full- or part-time job for me. It just came in spurts when I get requests from friends. There came a time I didn’t do any crafting and more of chatting on the internet. DH said I should change my name to Chat Fairy [haha!]. The biggest amount I got for a one-time job I did was enough to get me a Cricut Expression and an extra cartridge! All I did was design flyers for a couple of friends’ catering business. The agreed-upon payment was supposed to be free home-cooked meals every now and then. Who would have “thunk” that they’ll fall in love with the logo I designed that they decided to buy it from me! Hmmm….. looks like I have another hidden talent… or was it just pure luck?

Serenity is You, Maia.

Sheryl says, KAYA!

Thanks to Donna for her ingenious idea, finally I was able to use the set of coloring pencils I bought more than a year ago. It took me no time to create this page , what with the 'limited' supplies that miraculously survived after the shipwreck. Doing this layout made me realize that scrapbooking is like a closetful of wardrobe, the more you have, the longer it takes for you to decide what to wear.
Journaling Reads:
There are days I would stop to pause and take stock of what's happening around me. And so, I see wars, I notice chaos, I feel and realize I am stressed and for a moment I wonder how the word serenity was created. Then I saw this photo of my little girl, Maia. And I wondered no more.

Materials Used:
CS: Bazzill (Pink & Brown Orange); Zig Calligraphy pen (red); coloring pencils; regular ballpoint pen (black) for journalling.

About ME:
Working Mom.
Happy Mama to Lilaa and Maia, wife to my one big love. Rekindled my love affair with Scrapbooking in May 2006.
Overwhelmed with a lot of things going on in my life now all at the same time. Just glad I have scrapbooking to bust the stress away. I also c0-own and co-manage an online bookstore Bookoto.com with a good friend and kababayan Julie Kelly who is also a member of Pinoy Scrapbookers.

Our House

Nina says, KAYA!

I love my son to bits. But I've started to run out of words and the inspiration to keep scrapping Matt's photos. He has tons too so I don't think I'll ever finish them. Anyone have any suggestions on who else to turn to for inspiration on boys' layouts? I can only think of the fabulous Ali Edwards kasi.

So I decided to just have fun and do a layout on our house (which is actually my Mom's house) because I wanted to do these fun cut-outs of a tree, a bird, and a tree branch.

I was inspired by these rubber stamps I saw online, which was basically a leafless tree trunk and an oval shadow stamp for the leaves. I was also inspired by the birds and branches chipboard from Maya Road. So, starting from the cut-out tree, the rest of it came together.

TFL.

Journaling:
Our House

... with a blue roof and rusted gate.
... with a garden of weeds and wildflowers.
... where a tiny family lives.
... is a place we call home.

Materials used:
cardstock, black marker, black pen

Techniques used:
Paper piecing; used a puncher for the bird, butterfly and tear drops for the petals of one of the flowers; everything else was cut freehand

About ME:

I've been scrapping since March 2006. I was doodling with black sign pens on plain white paper in college. At 8, I was cutting out and pasting comic strips from the newspaper in a folder of collated paper. At present, I'm into altered art, ATCs and ATDs. To me, they're all the same form of expressing myself through paper.

Even though I initially didn't like Donna 'coz of this challenge (haha, joke lang po), I realized that oo nga naman, I should also use my stash of cardstock. I'm pretty good at improvising with what I have because scrapbooking, to me, isn't just about using up my stash but doing it in a creative way.

This was a fun challenge, D. Thanks for the inspiration.

c (loves) g

Christine says, KAYA!

Uhm, pretty challenging challenge! Haha! No patterned papers, no embellishments, no inking/stamping, no nothing! Ack! So Tuesday, 2 October, while I was having my lunch break, I tried to think about something that might actually work and I ended up sketching on the back of my lunch receipt. I had to attend to several other matters in the last couple of days so I was only able to execute my plan today. whew! thank goodness I can now say, KAYA! =)

About ME:
Married, with 2 kids - DD 7 and DS 4, part-time lecturer on restaurant operations. I have been scrapping on and off since 1984 using non-archival safe products (because I thought the acid-free stuff around that time looked cheesy, haha). I converted to the "other side" in 2006 when I saw gorgeous acid-free papers and other supplies. I've also dabbled in other crafts such as cross-stitching and candle-making. Are you up for the next challenge?
Kaya! 6 is as simple as...

BACK TO BASICS!

Imagine this... You were deserted in an island. You feel disoriented for quite a while and are struggling to remember how you got into that very big island. Then you had a glimpse of a party.. a scrapbooking party! OH! Now you remember!

You were in a cruise with your scrapbooking buddies when a bad storm topsy-turned your ship! Goodness!! You grabbed all your stuff! You hanged on them like they were life savers.. or the other way around?? You are making yourself as THEIR lifesaver! (hee hee)

That was the last thing you remember of that tragedy... but you are lucky to be still alive, you said to yourself. Realizing your situation, your mind set to survivor mode. You are alone and you have no one to turn to for help. You setup a place and you found food too. After making sure you are settled you stopped and remembered your family and friends... you remembered your precious scrapbooking stuff.

Suddenly, a shape caught your eye. You went over the shape and as you get nearer your heart pounded louder and louder.. IT IS ONE OF YOUR SCRAPBOOKING LUGGAGES!! One of those precious expensive luggages!! Maybe this is the thing that saved you?! Or YOU saved it?? (hee hee) You hurriedly took it in your make-shift house and opened your precious luggage carefully. There inside are your scissors, some acid-free pens and markers, cardstocks and an acid-free adhesive! Your preciouse photos are all there safe and sound too!!! You are so thrilled and so happy you wanted to make a layout right there and then! You forgot for a while where you are and the tragic situation at hand..

To be continued...

I know that story sounds too tragic but that's what came to our minds while formulating this challenge :D
So guys, our challenge for you is to make a layout using only the BASIC materials:

1) plain cardstock only (no patterned papers/distressed papers nor kraft papers)
2) hand-written or hand-cut title (no pre-mades, no diecuts, no stickers)
2) hand-written journaling (no typewriter, no computer, no stamping)
3) hand-written or hand-cut journaling (again, no computer fonts, no stickers, no diecuts)
4) can use regular (permanent markers, colored pens) pens to write (no gel pens, no metallic pens)
5) can use crayons, colored pencils, highlighters, and watercolors to color (no acrylic paints, metallic paints)
6) no stamping, no inks
7) no pre-made embellishments. make your own using plain cardstock only.
7) regular adhesives, no pop ups nor mounting tapes

So start scrapping, enjoy and goodluck!

All Kaya! 5 Layouts

Well, well, time flies when you're having fun. Already we are done with the first of the -ber months. And only 88 more days and it's Christmas. Here at Kaya, there's only two days to vote, and it will be like Christmas for someone...or sometwo.

But do give a warm round of applause for Cabbie who cooked up this month's challenge of layering at least six patterned papers. Many of us have not tried this before but we all came through. Truly, underneath the layers of insecurities and doubts, lies true talent. We just have to peel the layers one by one. Haha. OK enough with the layering jokes, here are the submissions for this month!

TRADITIONAL LAYOUTS

Playhouse

There are 19 traditional layouts and 7 digital layouts for this month. Vote for your favorite in each category. That means you get to pick TWO favorites - a digital and a traditional LO. Polls are open until September 29, 11:59 PM, Manila time. The chosen ones will be announced on September 30. Enjoy the eye candy. TFL!
